PHASE 18

Snakes, Soft Spots, and More Snakes

I waited about fifteen minutes after lights-out before I slipped out of bed and pulled on my shoes. By then, Vanessa was even antsier than I was. She hopped up and down on her bed while I got ready to go. “Dude,” she hissed as I slipped on my second shoe. “Could you put your shoes on any slower?”

“I could,” I replied, and slowed my pace just to prove it. I grinned as she huffed. “Dude, chill yourself. We’ll be back soon. It’s not like you’re going to have to wait all night to pull the prank off.”

“That’s not what I’m excited about,” Vanessa said, and I glanced at her, eyebrows raised. She winked at my confused expression.

Oh.

“You are aware that we’re going to pick up snakes, which I hate, right?” I finished tying my shoe and stood up, hands on my hips. “So, nothing romantic is going to be happening.”

“This is the equivalent of going to see a horror movie.” The next thing I knew, Vanessa jumped off her bed, grabbed me by the arm, and pushed me outside. “Go get ‘em, tiger!” she squealed.

I turned to give her an unimpressed glance, but found a closed door in her place. So I gave the door a flat look instead, before twisting on my heel and venturing down the path that led to the main area. I was just going to assume we were meeting there. One of these days, Will would actually tell me where he wanted to meet instead of settling with “outside”—or maybe he wouldn’t. Oh, well. Until then, I was stuck guessing.

It seemed I guessed correctly. As I entered the main area, I spotted Will leaning against the rock wall, his gaze cast absently ahead of him. When he saw me approaching, he pushed off the wall and sauntered over to me, one hand gripping a duffel bag. “You ready?” he asked.

I nodded. “Yeah.”

Will’s lips pricked upward. “Okay then. Let’s go.”

As Will grabbed onto my elbow and steered me toward the camp’s entrance, I glanced at the Head’s office. Is he still up, or does he go to bed the same time we do? And if he's still awake, what if he looks out his window and catches us walking down the road? This was why I didn’t sneak out. The thought of getting caught threatened to send me into a panic.

As though he sensed my sudden anxiety, Will said, “He’s in bed.”

“You’re sure?”

Will nodded. “He goes to bed at the same time we do.”

My eyebrows rose. “And you know this how?”

“I’m madly in love with him, and watching him while he sleeps gives me great pleasure.” Will couldn’t conceal his smile as I burst into laughter. I covered my mouth to keep my guffaws from alerting the apparent love of Will’s life. Vanessa was going to be mighty disappointed when she found out. “No. Might I remind you that I had to sneak out to get the spiders?”

Oh, yeah. “Right,” I said, scratching an itch on my temple and tossing him a smile.
